How it works

The maths behind your lot size

On most platforms 1 standard lot of XAU/USD is 100 ounces. That means:

  • 1.00 lot gains or loses $100 for every $1.00 gold moves ($1 for every $0.01)
  • 0.10 lot = $10 per $1.00 move
  • 0.01 lot = $1 per $1.00 move

So: lot size = money at risk ÷ (stop distance in $ × 100).

Example: $1,000 account, 1% risk = $10. Stop is $3.00 away. $10 ÷ ($3 × 100) = 0.033, which rounds down to 0.03 lots. If the stop is hit you lose $9 (0.9%). The calculator always rounds down, so you never risk more than you planned.

Many traders count gold in pips where 1 pip = $0.10. A $3.00 stop is then 30 pips, and 1 lot is worth $10 per pip.

FAQ

Questions

What is 1 lot of gold?

Usually 100 troy ounces. Some providers use different contract sizes, so check the contract specification on your platform.

How much should I risk per trade?

Many traders keep risk to around 1% of the account per trade or less, so a losing streak doesn't wipe them out. This is education, not advice.

Why is my result 0.00 lots?

Your stop is too wide for the amount you want to risk. Even 0.01 lot would lose more than your limit. Use a tighter stop, or skip the trade.

Does it work in pounds?

Yes. Choose British pounds and type today's GBP/USD rate. Gold is priced in dollars, so the calculator converts.
